One man died and two others were injured in a head-on crash.
A van and car collided outside the Jack and Jill pub on the A273 at Clayton near Hassocks at 3.15pm yesterday.
The driver of the car, a Vauxhall Astra, died and a passenger in the van was seriously hurt. The van driver escaped with minor injuries.
Two fire crews and paramedics spent two hours treating and cutting free the three casualties.
Police closed the road and traffic was diverted.
Both vehicles were wrecked and the road was covered in oil and petrol.
The cars were removed just before 7pm.
Barman at the Jack and Jill pub Simon Coxshaw said: "We didn't open until quite a long time after the accident because we had to come in using various different ways because the road was blocked off."
The road was still closed off at 7pm.
