In recent weeks, a number of correspondents have expressed concern over the war in Iraq.
Last week, there was a TV documentary on Michael Drosnin's book, the Bible Code (Horizon).
According to Drosnin, the original Hebrew Bible contains a hidden code warning mankind that unless we change our ways, in the year 2006 the world will go into global nuclear war.
The conflict in the Middle East will be the trigger.
The documentary invited you to consider one of two conclusions. Either the code is the over-fertile imagination of a group of barking mad scientists. Alternatively, in three years' time nine out of ten of us will be dead.
However, there is one question we all need to ask. Suppose Drosnin has got it wrong. Will any harm be done if the world's leaders take it seriously and actually talk peace?
Suppose Drosnin has got it right. What harm will be done if the world's leaders do nothing? Answer? There will be no one left to write letters to The Argus.
Surely even if Drosnin is barking mad the best course of action is to talk peace.
