Shakespeare for families - a great idea, although I'm not sure if younger audiences are quite ready for the rape and mutilation in Titus Andronicus or murder and incest in Hamlet.
The comedies, however, are a different matter altogether. Witty and fun with enough innuendo to keep older children amused, they are an excellent introduction to the Bard and Chapterhouse Theatre Company did a grand job with its rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
With some excellent directorial touches, such as the Teletubby-like, comical entrances of the players, the "playground snogging" embraces of the lovers and plenty of rude gesturing, the farcical plot was clearly communicated.
Particular mention must go to the players whose country-bumpkin characters were endearing and comical in equal measure. Their "play", as presented to Theseus, Hippolyta and the lovers, was hysterical - the kids (and the mums and dads) loved it.
My one criticism is for the music. Rather than helping to lift the pace and move along the plot, the songs were boring, the lyrics repetitive and, quite frankly, they were not executed well enough.
Generally, the music seemed quite amateurish which was a shame as, overall, the production was quite excellent.
