Councillor Craig Turton informs us (Letters, December 5) he is a member of the cross-party working group to look into the question of Hove Library and duly trots out the claim that a lift "will inevitably cut the space available for books and study".
How does he know? Isn't it the job of a working party to look into this and then report? So far, it has had one (contentious) meeting and made brisk visits to both sites.
I happened to be in the library when they were there. In less than an hour, they were gone from a building in which one could stay all day. They did not have any floor plans to hand.
The inspectors have just made their substantial report on the building in connection with the Disability Discrimination Act. Could Coun Turton tell us where this can be consulted?
The substance of that report suggests the much-loved library is far from a hopeless case and for Coun Turton to throw in the question of "security" is scaremongering.
To claim Hove Town Hall would have more shelf space goes in the face of all budgetary statements. Again, where are the shelf plans?
In October, the council was all set to push this move through. That is, before the Disability Discrimination Act inspectors had made their report.
Very curious. And now, with the working party having not established any system of public involvement, we find Coun Turton inviting comments to be made to him.
Why him, in particular? Have the rest of the working party acknowledged this as the correct procedure?
