City councillors have given final approval to a controlled parking scheme.

Work will soon start on marking out the bays in the Prestonville area of Brighton.

Transport councillor Simon Battle said: "We are very aware of the frustrations residents and businesses have experienced in Prestonville and are pleased that it is now entering the final stages.

"We can start work straight after Christmas so the scheme can be up and running in March."

Resident permits will be discounted to £52 in the first year and the scheme will be reviewed after six months to ensure it is working well.

The Prestonville scheme follows other parking zones introduced in 2002 and earlier this year, such as those in Goldsmid and Westbourne.

Public consultation with residents and businesses revealed overwhelming support.

Councillors also approved changes to the Central Hove scheme which include starting enforcement at 9am instead of 10am.

They also approved alterations to the Brunswick scheme which include providing more than 100 extra parking spaces.
