Simon Smith is quite correct. It is a myth the Royal Family attracts tourists (Letters, December 11).
Even a recent article in The Times reported studies that showed our tourist trade would not be affected adversely by Britain becoming a republic.
Even if it would, we should not be basing our constitution on tourism industry concerns.
The US does not make Mickey Mouse its head of state despite Disney being a major draw card for overseas visitors.
A Mickey Mouse fairytale institution has no place in a modern democracy.
The case for a democratically elected head of state is winning increasing support.
