I trust the authorities concerned will ignore demands by Joe O'Keefe and others to curb the Lewes bonfire celebrations.
Burning an effigy of the Pope may be a bit silly and even offensive to some but it is preferable to burning real people at the stake, a frequent occurrence in ages of faith when Catholics persecuted Protestants, Protestants persecuted Catholics and both persecuted Jews.
Mr O'Keefe would do well to remember that where there is religion there is religious intolerance.
