Burgess Hill boss Gary Croydon watched his side lose for the first time in ten games after being outplayed by title-chasing Histon.
Histon, who lost their unbeaten league record with a 4-1 home defeat by King's Lynn on New Year's Day, played without much fear in this game, bossing it from start to finish.
Croydon admitted his side still fall short against the top teams but is still pleased with the progress made in the first season of Southern League football.
Not so pleasing was the dismissal of skipper Ben Andrews for a second bookable offence when he was pushed forward in the closing minutes.
The only goal came ten minutes from time when Louie Farrington scored as the ball came back off a post.
