Customers were showered with glass after the door to a restaurant was kicked in.
At least six people and a baby in a pram were hit at the La Trattoria restaurant in Brighton.
Manager Gisella Pither is now asking anyone with information about the person responsible for the New Year's Eve attack to call police.
The incident happened at about 10.30pm when the restaurant was full.
Ms Pither said: "We could hear some commotion outside and when we looked out we saw a woman kicking our A-board sign down the road.
"She appeared to be angry because she had been refused entry to a club nearby. She then walked straight up to the restaurant door and just kick-boxed it."
The restaurant, based in King's Road and close to the Thistle Hotel, opened last November and has steadily been building up a good trade.
The damage to the door is expected to run into hundreds of pounds and Ms Pither also lost out because she had to close early.
The woman was dark skinned, had dreadlocks and was wearing red boots and a short skirt.
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0845 6070999.
