Leaflets informed us Brighton and Hove would introduce new street bins in exactly the same way as Edinburgh had.
But a friend has sent me a clipping from the Edinburgh Herald and Post headed "Judge's damning verdict on bins".
The High Court judge in question, Lord Hamilton, has launched a savage attack on plans to introduce such bins, arguing they will "disfigure historic streetscapes". He brands a trial of 16 weeks of the communal bins "a fruitless and wasteful exercise".
Dozens of objections are flooding into Edinburgh City Council over the mere prospect of trials being held in its most celebrated streets.
The council had tried to introduce the scheme without going through the proper planning procedures, in much the same way as Brighton and Hove City Council has piloted a similar scheme here.
Some planning applications to introduce the bins have already been withdrawn.
Councillor Gill Mitchell and others indulging in this "fruitless and wasteful exercise" should pay some heed to the objections being launched against it, not only locally but also in one of Britain's most historic and elegant cities.
