His latest television incarnation is a football chairman known for dodgy deals.
But actor John Forgeham is playing things by the book as he tries to lose weight in front of millions of viewers during the next three months.
And there is a network of hidden cameras and an American marine sergeant to make sure he does not revert to type during the new series of Celebrity Fit Club.
John, based in Saltdean, plays wheeler dealer Frank Laslett in Footballers' Wives but will be trying ballet and salsa dancing as he battles to beat the bulge.
The 15st actor is hoping to lose about 2st during the course.
Along with seven other personalities, he will be facing the wrath of no-nonsense gunnery sergeant Harvey Walden IV as he puts them through rigorous exercises.
The sergeant famously fell out with MP Anne Widdecombe and failed Pop Idol hopeful Rik Waller in the first series.
Participants will also get nutritional advice from Adam Carey, who advises England's World Cup-winning rugby squad and Chelsea Football Club.
Comedian Freddie Starr, presenters Lowri Turner and Vanessa Feltz, radio presenters Jono Coleman and Amy Lam, former Big Brother contestant Alison Hammond and journalist James Whittaker are also taking part.
John, 62, said: "I have always had to watch my weight. It has gone up and down over the years.
"I already managed to lose three-and-a-half stones to prepare for the last series of Footballers' Wives but more needed to be lost."
Taking part in the programme means John is constantly followed by a camera crew and has to try to avoid hidden cameras installed to ensure he is not grabbing a bar of chocolate.
He has to watch what he eats and stick to a healthy diet, go to the gym regularly and take part in weigh-ins.
John said: "It is a bit strange being followed around Brighton by the crew. Knowing they are tracking your every move and have cameras hidden away makes you paranoid but it is quite fun.
He grew up in Birmingham and first knew he wanted to make acting his career when he played the lead in a school production of Macbeth at 14.
At 17, he won a place at drama school and two years later won a scholarship to Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. (RADA)
His first role was alongside legendary actors Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole in the film Becket. He also featured in The Italian Job.
The first episode of Celebrity Fit Club is on ITV1 tonight at 8pm.
