The new Tesco store in Hove has a spacious and uncluttered frontage on to Church Road.
There is just one sign, pointing at the shop and reading "Superstore" (the kind of sign that if you can read it, you surely don't need it).
Can someone from Tesco explain what they had to do to persuade the council not to clutter up their frontage with assorted bins, signposts and planters?
The rest of Church Road is an obstacle course. First came the hoops to tie your dog or bicycle to. Then all the signage and slot machines associated with the parking schemes.
Then the black bin Planters to Improve Our Environment. Then railings to stop you wandering into the gutter. Goodness knows what next.
Pedestrian calming chicanes? I suggest our councillors press for an overall 75 per cent reduction in the amount of council-generated street clutter along Church Road.
It could become a real pleasure to walk along.
I bet there are other streets which could benefit too. I wonder which is the most cluttered street in the city? Nominations?
