I'm baffled that Jo Dillon is baffled by my position on the Higher Education Bill (The Argus, January 29). She should do more research.
The Argus reported my views at length on December 4, 2003, and again on the front page on January 28.
She fails to explain that the Bill is not only about variable fees, of which I am critical.
It is also about ending the up-front payment of tuition fees; grants for students from low-income families; an improved system of payment by students after graduation based on income; setting up a regulator to widen access to higher education - all of which should encourage more of my constituents with the qualifications to opt for university.
Ms Dillon also fails to point out that last week's vote was the first stage of a long parliamentary process which now gives the opportunity to amend the Bill.
