A survivor of a boat crash in which a man accidentally killed his own brother has died.
Michael Tierney, who had terminal lung cancer, suffered a broken leg in the accident that killed Ian Langan in August 2002, and his injuries made it inoperable.
Despite his illness he attended last October's inquest into the accident, where he criticised Mr Langan's younger brother Cliff who was steering one of the boats involved.
Yet Cliff Langan has led the tributes to 53-year-old Mr Tierney, whose boat Freebird is still moored at Brighton Marina.
Mr Tierney, who divided his time between the marina and Kings Langley in Hertfordshire, was a popular member of Brighton Marina Yacht Club.
He died in a hospice in Watford on Tuesday night.
Mr Tierney, a sailor for 41 years, was sitting next to Ian Langan, 45, when their boat Seadoo was hit by the 25ft-long speedboat Blue Sunset, driven by Cliff Langan..
He tried to duck out of the way as the Blue Sunset's propeller hit him and Mr Langan, who was knocked overboard and later found dead. Mr Tierney suffered a broken left leg and ribs and was still walking on crutches at the time of the inquest at Brighton Coroner's Court.
The inquest heard how Cliff Langan and Seadoo's owner and driver Glenn Mackay had been drinking heavily before the crash about 50 metres south of Brighton's Palace Pier.
