Four months of traffic misery are expected when roadworks are carried out on one of the busiest roads in Brighton.

New bus and cycle lanes and better traffic lights are being provided in the shopping section of Lewes Road between Elm Grove and the Vogue Gyratory.

From Monday, drivers are asked to find alternative routes wherever possible to avoid delays.

Transport councillor Simon Battle said the £400,000 scheme would improve travel for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users.

He said: "The work will improve the look of the area as it includes an upgrade for street lighting and tree planting.

"New pedestrian crossings are also being installed."

Later in the year the same stretch of road will be reconstructed to make it smoother and safer.

The work has been scheduled to avoid other major highway schemes around the city.
