Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company must not be allowed to dictate to the town hall about improvements it wants as none of these would benefit the residents.

I live in the outskirts of the City at Mile Oak and we have more than 260 bus movements a day past our door. The majority of these buses are empty, too big for the narrow roads within the estate and offer a 10-minute service when a 20 minute service would suffice. Now the bus company wants quality bus corridors installed to improve the service.

Of all traffic abusers on the road, the buses, in my opinion, account for 70-80 per cent.

To increase the flow of traffic in Brighton (and avoid any congestion charging) I suggest the following:

1. Western Road (Waitrose - Clock Tower) should have a reduced speed limit of 20mph and controlled access for buses only (no motorbikes or taxis) and delivery vehicles at certain hours.

2. A259 (Brighton Pier - King Alfred) should have all traffic signals removed and a dual carriageway with a central divide installed for the entire length, with roundabouts at the West Street and Grand Avenue junctions and zebra crossings every 250 metres.

The road should be widened by ten feet into the lawns. This would allow reverse parking into the kerb on both sides and double both the existing parking arrangements and the parking fees collected. One in ten spaces would be reserved for disabled parking. There should be a speed limit of 50mph in winter and 40mph in summer.

This would allow through traffic to move more quickly without getting caught up in local traffic and cars turning across oncoming traffic.

It would mean a faster flow of traffic for locals as well. Plans for out-of-town park-and-ride schemes should be scrapped because people coming to Brighton beach or shops will not want to lug all their effects on a bus when they have driven their car to the resort.
