P Lynch (Letters, March 3) thinks my idea of letting Brighton and Hove private hire vehicles to pick up on taxi ranks between 2am and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights is not too bright.
"What if a lone female was to get into a private hire?" he asks. What is his point?
Private hire drivers and vehicles are licensed with the hackney carriage office. The drivers are given a police check every three years and have to pass the same knowledge test as Hackney drivers. Private hire vehicles of Brighton and Hove are also easily recognisable.
I would imagine the police would be quite happy to clear West Street of merry clubbers on these nights a lot quicker than happens now.
