Lewes put an end to their relegation fears with a 2-0 win at Hounslow and Ealing yesterday.

With only one team likely to be relegated from National League division two this year, Lewes are now all but safe.

Rock bottom Hounslow, with just one win all season, would need to win all five of their remaining games to stand any chance of catching Lewes now.

Goals from Adrian Bettesworth and Carl Wright made it a profitable weekend for Lewes, who had drawn 2-2 with fellow strugglers Leek at home on Saturday.

Manager Paul Benoy said: "Hopefully that will enable us to relax and play the hockey we are capable of in our remaining games."

Lewes should have taken maximum points on Saturday as goals from Wright and Bettesworth put them in control after seven minutes. Luke Hurle then spurned a golden chance to extend the lead and Leek seized their opportunity to score twice in the final four minutes of the first half.

Lewes' next opponents are leaders East Grinstead, who stayed top despite a 3-1 defeat away to Bath Buccaneers on Saturday.

Having gone unbeaten in their opening 14 games, Grinstead have now lost two of their last three.

Rivals Old Georgians could only draw 2-2 at Oxford Hawks but Bath and Brooklands are now hot on the heels of the top two.

Grinstead player-coach Kwan Browne remains confident his side can still win the title.

He said: "It makes it more interesting because the other two are now in contention but we are still confident we can do it."

Duncan Howarth cancelled out an early opener for Bath but the hosts scored either side of half time to clinch a surprise win.
