Albion manager Mark McGhee today predicted the promotion bid will not be resolved until the final match at Wrexham in May.

McGhee is expecting a nerve-jangling climax to the campaign after last night's 1-0 win against struggling Brentford at Withdean lifted the Seagulls back into the play-off zone.

"I think it is going to be like this to the last kick," he said. "I think we will need to win in the last game of the season to stay in the play-offs."

Richard Carpenter's fourth goal of the season in the second half clinched Albion's fourth home win in succession but the main talking point was the substitution of Leon Knight.

The 21-goal striker, returning from a one-match ban, was replaced midway through the second half by 17-year-old Jake Robinson. McGhee said: "You are only as good as the game you are in. Leon was not at his best.

"He was coming back from suspension, so I give him the benefit of doubt, but I thought Jake came on and showed more life."

Brentford goalkeeper Stuart Nelson, making his League debut, was sent-off in the closing stages when he brought down Robinson outside the penalty area.

McGhee said: "I thought it was hard on him. It was clumsy and I can understand the referee sending him off but Jake still had a bit to do because defenders were covering.

"Jake knew he was likely to get clattered. He is about four stone seven and yet he is as brave as a lion."
