You rightly highlight the Brighton Bears basketball team's comprehensive demolition of the Thames Valley Tigers last Saturday (The Argus, March 8), but omitted another major bonus of the day.

Of their own volition, the team decided to mark national No Smoking Day today by declaring the Brighton Centre smoke-free for the day.

We are delighted our local sports teams are taking such positive action to promote healthy activities.

The Brighton Centre management should also be congratulated for its co-operation. And let's not forget those who did the decent thing and abided by the smoking ban for the duration - well done.

Above all, this clearly demonstrates that public places in the city can continue to operate successfully when voluntary action is taken for the benefit of the public's health.

Working together like this we can ensure we tackle three of the biggest killers in Brighton and Hove - cancer, heart disease and stroke - which are caused through smoking.
