Almost two thirds of small businesses fall into exporting "by accident", according to figures released today.

A survey by Parcelforce Worldwide showed 65 per cent of small and medium-sized exporters had not planned to target overseas markets.

More than half only began exporting because someone overseas placed an unsolicited order.

A total of 82 per cent failed to seek advice on exporting and virtually none of those interviewed had contacted a British embassy.

The figures coincide with a new guide from Parcelforce Worldwide and the British Chambers of Commerce to help small businesses export effectively.

Vanessa Leeson, Parcelforce Worldwide's managing director, said: "A lack of planning means some companies fail to realise the full benefits of exporting."

The guide will be available at every British Chambers of Commerce office in the UK and via www.parcelforce.com
