Rod Ackers (Letters, March 4) has misread the Highway Code rules on box junctions.

He refers to bus drivers on Route 1, stating they should not enter the box if oncoming traffic is blocking their exit.

The 2003 Highway Code, page 40, rule 150, says of box junctions that you must not enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear.

However, it also says you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.

I hope this puts this to rest. However, there are two other rules Mr Ackers should be aware of.

You must not speak to or distract a driver's attention while the vehicle is in motion, including while the vehicle is waiting to move - there is a notice to this effect on every PSV vehicle.

Secondly, you should not stand forward of that notice.
