Gatwick has reported a jump in passenger numbers because 2004 is a leap year.
More than 1.9 million people travelled through the airport in February, 5.3 per cent up on last year.
If February 29 is not included in the figures, the increase is only 0.6 per cent.
A number of airlines announced new routes from Gatwick during February, including easyJet and British Airways.
Operator BAA said its seven UK airports, including Gatwick, handled 9.5 million passengers last month. Stripped of the extra day, the increase over February 2003 was 4.7 per cent, similar to the January rise.
