It's time to abolish "Bank" Holidays. They are socially unjust and environmentally damaging.
Every worker should have an individual holiday entitlement to be taken at times negotiated with his or her employer.
There is no reason why some workers should be told when to take days off and no reason why other workers - like those in Brighton's service sector - should suffer in consequence.
Nor is there any reason why the Government should condemn local public services to grind to a halt on a handful of arbitrary (though usually wet and miserable) days.
Individual entitlements allow workers to take time off to suit themselves, their families and their religious or cultural allegiances.
Abolish "Bank" Holidays and you have less traffic congestion, fewer queues and more satisfied visitors to the City.
You also have cheaper package holidays.
