Charlotte Browning was second in the 1,500m on her senior international debut for England at Cardiff.

Browning, 16, the double national indoor champion from Chichester, finished in 4min.34sec behind experienced Debbie Jones of Wales.

She missed the English Schools' Cross Country Championships to compete.

Browning, a Chichester High pupil, said: "The English Schools was the day before and I felt the benefit by missing it. I was fresh."

Sarah Fielding-Smith, a Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College pupil, was runner-up in the under-20 high jump. She cleared 1.73m.

Set Osho (Cardinal Newman School, Hove) was third in the under-20 400m (49.82sec).

The Sussex contingent helped England beat Wales, Ireland and Loughborough.

Meanwhile, Sussex were third in the senior boys' event at the English Schools' Cross Country Championships at Maidstone, with Conor McClarnon leading the way.

McClarnon (Chichester High), who was 35th, received solid support from Sussex Downs (Lewes) pair Steven Jules (41st) and Nick Lucas (50th) and Chichester's Tom Fuller (52nd).

The junior boys were tenth. George Bond (William Parker, Hastings) was 21st with Timmy Gedin (Oakmeeds, Burgess Hill) 34th and Matthew Barrie (Blatchington Mill, Hove) 80th.

Jules' brother Lee (Filsham Valley, Hastings) was the first Sussex runner home in the intermediate boys in 82nd. The team finished 20th.

Sophie Coleman (Brighton and Hove High), a combined events athlete, led Sussex home in the junior girls (45th). The team were 18th. The intermediate girls were 23rd and the seniors 31st.
