Manager Steve Lovell believes Hastings are still not playing to their full potential.
United won at Newport IoW thanks to two goals in three minutes in the first half.
Mark Goodwin scored the first from close range on 19 minutes following a corner by Ryan Peters.
Moments later, Chris Honey doubled the advantage with a shot which took a wicked deflection.
Adam Barsdell scored for the Islanders on 56 minutes.
Victory was United's second in a row and takes them four places above the eastern division drop-zone.
Lovell said: "The three points are very satisfying but I still think we can do better. We could have scored four or five."
