Lisa Chapman today revealed how her British Olympic swimming call-up was inspired by her dad.
Chapman clinched a place in the 4x100m freestyle relay squad for Athens at trials in Sheffield.
Her father, John, is in a London hospital with leukaemia and needs a bone marrow donor.
She beat pre-race favourite Alison Sheppard to secure her place by finishing fourth in the 100m freestyle behind winner Mel Marshall, Kathyrn Evans and Karen Pickering, who form the rest of the relay squad Lisa, 19, from Flimwell, said: "I went in hoping for a good swim but not expecting anything. But 15 metres out I got my head down and thought about what getting to the Olympics would mean to my dad as well as my mum and that enabled me to pull something extra out.
"I burst into tears when I hugged my mum immediately after the race. It was such a mixture of emotions.
"There was the stress of what's happening with my dad and the fact I'd wanted to race in the Olympics since I was four.
"It has been a tough year, I even broke my hand after falling down stairs and missed nearly three months of training.
"I spent the about two hours after my race literally shaking all over. I was calm before the race but all my emotions poured out afterwards."
