Brighton Buccaneers are trying to raise the cash to keep one of their star players.

Great Britain international pitcher Nick Carter may not be around when the new Rawlings National League season gets underway away to Bracknell Blazers on Sunday.

Carter, who is combining being trainee teacher with studies to become a professional dancer, cannot afford to take so much time off work, although Brighton have not given up hope of him playing a part as they bid to win back their national title.

Head coach Craig Savage said: "We are trying to get him sponsored so that he can play. Nick Carter is a major asset to this club as he would be to any club but we need about £500 to keep him playing."

Despite losing their national crown to Windsor last season, Brighton are still considered the leading light in British baseball.

In the last five seasons they have won the title three times, finished twice the other two years and were European Cup finalists in 2000.

Great Britain third baseman Dave Donaldson has left the club to play in Sweden and Canadian Pat Austin is not coming back but infielder Liam Carroll has joined from Bracknell and will make his bow against his old club on Sunday.

Another new face is Canadian John Chadwick who has played professionally in his homeland.
