Five men and a teenager facing terrorism charges appeared at the Old Bailey for the first time yesterday.

The suspects were arrested in the South-East including Crawley. Four are charged with conspiring to cause an explosion.

Jawad Akbar, 20, Omar Khyam, 22, and Waheed Mahmoud, 32, from Crawley, and Anthony Garcia, 21, from Ilford, Essex, appeared in the dock.

The are alleged to have "unlawfully and maliciously" conspired with a 17-year-old to cause an explosion between October 2003 and March this year. The 17-year-old appeared with them.

A court order was made to prevent the teenager being identified.

Two of the four, along with the fifth man, are charged with possession of 600kg of ammonium nitrate fertiliser. All were remanded in custody.

Mr Garcia, Mr Khyam and Nabeel Hussain, 18, from Horley, are also charged with possession of 600kg of ammonium nitrate fertiliser.

They were remanded in custody until mid-July by Judge Michael Hyam.
