The coach of a youth rugby team was today meeting the parents of an 18-year-old player who died on tour.

The teenager, who plays for the Horsham Under-18s, was found dead in the sea off Newquay, Cornwall.

Police are treating his death as unexplained but officers said today they did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances.

A spokesman said the teenager had been out with team-mates on Friday night and had not returned to his accommodation.

Detectives at Newquay were today scouring CCTV footage from the town centre in an attempt to piece together the young player's last movements.

The team had lost against Penzance Under-18s earlier in the day.

The alarm was raised when the teenager's body was discovered at North Quay at about 11.15am on Saturday.

Coastguards alerted Devon and Cornwall Police and the body was recovered and brought into Newquay Harbour by life-boat.

Police have informed the Falmouth coroner and a post-mortem examination was being carried out.

Nick Brown, the representative for Horsham Under-18s rugby team, was preparing to meet the boy's parents today after learning of the tragedy.

Mr Brown said: "I cannot say anything until I have got permission from the parents.

"The police have asked me to meet them today."

The boy has not yet been formally identified.

Newquay coastguard Pete Dee said: "The police gave permission for the body to be brought into the lifeboat and recovered to Newquay boathouse.

"There were three coastguards and three lifeboat crew members involved.

"There were also paramedics on the scene and the police were present while the body was recovered to Newquay Harbour."
