So, the drive to turn our lovely stretch of coast into a Sussex version of Torremolinos is to begin in Portslade with a 400ft skyscraper that will tower even over the 38-storey shocker planned for the King Alfred site.
But it has now been acknowledged that the tower blocks that once hugged the Costa del Sol are expensive mistakes.
The pursuit of short-term profit led to a collapse in the once-lucrative tourist market in that part of Spain and a law has been passed to forbid any further such overdevelopment. Existing blocks are being dynamited.
Since our city also relies heavily on its tourist trade, does it make sense for the council to allow developers to give our stylish resort that package holiday feel?
