Rush-hour rail services suffered severe delays after a person died on the tracks at Gatwick station yesterday.
The main line was closed for an hour after the victim was struck by the Brighton to London express, travelling at 90mph.
Northbound and southbound trains were unable to pass Gatwick station for an hour, following the incident shortly after 4pm.
Delays to services between Sussex and the capital continued until early evening.
A spokesman for South Central said: "Because it was just before the peak hour it caused knock-on delays."
Transport police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
