I would like to take issue with Adam Trimingham's continued criticism of the Brighton Centre.

He seems to think that his opinion, however blinkered and ill-informed, is a reflection of those in the city and that he is the spokesman for all "right-thinking" citizens.

True, the centre is due for replacement but this does not mean that it no longer serves its purpose extremely well.

I, too, was at the Jools Holland concert but rather than the lacklustre affair described by Mr Trimingham, I found it was a fantastic evening enjoyed by the capacity crowd and, judging by the annual repeat performances, rather popular with Jools, himself.

I would also like to point out that Mr Trimingham was probably not present to see The Jam, Third World or The Specials, but would suggest that these gigs were hardly lacking in atmosphere.

His point about the acoustics is also far from accurate, as both Nigel Kennedy and the RPO gave splendid concerts and I don't remember hearing a single complaint about the sound quality.

Personally, I feel that his much laboured point about the "£10 a year" paid by every man, woman and child represents very good value for money, amounting to just 19p per week to have the finest entertainment in Britain appear on our doorsteps.

I feel everyone agrees that a new Brighton Centre is important to the city but let's not applaud the new by damning the old.
