Two legendary names in contemporary jazz made this an unmissable event.

It was an evening of contrasts, Billy Cobham's Art Of Five set was a sparkling updating of the hard bop legacy, with a nod to Art Blakey in the presentation.

Like that other great drummer, Cobham assembled a team of brilliant younger soloists, all well-established virtuosi who contributed their own charts.

Joe Zawinul, who pretty much defined the use of synthesiser in jazz, was exhilarating from start to finish.

He was three players in one, layering totally independent lines on synths while soloing on organ and adding stunning sampled effects using his voice.

His band played a seamless run of funk-charged inventive pieces, moving to a township groove where astonishing vocalist Sabine Kabongo proved another highlight of the evening.

Guitarist Amit Chatterjee's solos and spine-tingling vocal features stood out, as did Linley Marthe on bass.

Weather Report's veteran percussionist and vocalist Manolo Badrena and drummer Nathaniel Townsley also took this from the merely brilliant to awe-inspiring.
