In response to your article "Worrying drop in demand" (The Argus, April 29), happily, libraries are bucking the trend in Brighton and Hove.
Last year 1.1 million people visited our libraries, an increase of almost four per cent on the previous year.
Pretty good compared with the 21 per cent national decrease you cite from a report.
We have not experienced a decline in the amount of books issued over the last year either, despite the fact that our central Brighton library is in temporary accommodation.
Enquiries have increased by a staggering 28 per cent this year. Despite media warnings of technology taking over, people still like to speak to helpful staff and visit their community library.
A visit to any of our community libraries will show a wide range of new books, DVDs, videos and music CDs, children attending homework clubs, storytelling and musical workshops, people of all ages enjoying reading groups and a space where people can meet each other and find out what is going on in their community.
