I couldn't agree more with Dr Alan Bond (Letters, May 8). I went into Millview Hospital to detox in June 2003 and was fortunate enough to get straight into the recovery project in Brighton. I'd had several detoxes before but they had all been unsuccessful.
The recovery project has done more for me than any drink or drugs could do.
Some of the staff are in recovery themselves, which helps a great deal as they know the pressures and pitfalls that lay ahead for people like myself who are looking for a better way of life.
I was a resident for six months and what I learnt about myself in that short time money could not buy.
Unfortunately, I did not complete it (through my dishonesty) but the seed of recovery was planted and one of the things that was encouraged was to attend AA and NA meetings which I still do and receive a great deal of support from other people trying to live life on life's terms.
Thanks to the recovery project my mum and dad have got back the son they thought they'd lost and I've got my selfworth back and look forward to a happy, worthwhile life a day at a time.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to share my gratitude and say thanks to my keyworker, who is on maternity leave. Thank you and I hope you live in peace and harmony with your new family.
-Tony, Brighton
