In 1979, when Forest Row rider Sean Yates was 19 and had yet to make his mark in world-class races, he set a new national ten-mile record of 20min.7sec.
Now, just days after celebrating his 44th birthday, he averaged 30mph to record 19min.53sec in the National Ten-Mile Championship in Nottinghamshire.
Yates (In Gear) finished 11th against 150 of the fastest riders in the country, many of whom were around half his age.
Clubmate Peter Tadros, from Hastings, also rode well to finish 20th (20min.17sec). Defending champion Stuart Dangerfield (Science in Sport) retained his title in a new championship record of 18min.40sec.
Helen Carter (Eastbourne Rovers), one of the seeded riders in the women's championships, finished 32nd in 24min.35sec. The winner was Wendy Houvenaghel (RAFCA) in 22min.7sec.
Nick Harvey (Brighton Mitre) clocked 1hr.5min.53sec to finish second in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 30-mile open event.
Lee Povey (Dataphonics) won the sprint event at the third Sussex track league meeting at Preston Park from team-mate Robin Thompson and Giles Wingate (Principia).
Crawley's Angela Brown (21st Century Airports) won the women's race.
Matthew Howard (VC Jubilee) won the under-16s race from Adam Gent (Sussex Nomads) and Josh Moresco (VC Jubilee).
Steve Dennis (East Grinstead), the winner for the past three years, heads the field for the Sussex 50-mile Championship on Sunday.
