It appears most of our councillors, including the Greens, are incapable of joined-up thinking.
Park and ride schemes can be effective but must be intelligently positioned. It is no surprise Brighton's park and ride is little more than a convenient bus service for the local population, situated as it is, a third of the way into Brighton and Hove in an almost-secret location as far as visitors are concerned.
The council owns the ideal park and ride location - the island of land between the A27 and Vale Avenue. A scheme here would be ideally situated to access the centre not only via London Road but also Lewes Road, Dyke Road Avenue and Dyke Road.
Close by is the obvious place to build a multi-purpose stadium.
I believe land situated on the part of Waterhall to the east of the London railway line is also council owned. This area is virtually unused.
A halt-type station here could bring and take those travelling by rail and extra parking at the stadium could augment that available at the park and ride close by. With the exception of those travelling from Brighton and Hove, visitors for specific events need never enter the city, lessening the likelihood of hooliganism and aiding policing.
This would not set a precedent for development to the north of the A27. There is already a camping site and a powerful radio mast north of the A27. The proposed site at Falmer is also on the Downs and on a far more sensitive and visible site.
