I am seeking information about the many thousands of Spanish refugee children evacuated to this country in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War.
Many came to Brighton, Worthing and Lancing, others to Littlehampton, Bury Hill and Blackboys.
They received little financial support from their own government and none from the British government and lived here in very straitened circumstances.
Many later joined their parents in exile in other countries while some returned to their homes in Spain.
Others were separated from their families for years, in some cases until the Franco's death. The surviving refugees, now elderly, are trying to piece together the history of those days and would appreciate any information from readers of The Argus.
I have gleaned some material from local newspapers but it is sparse.
It may be that there are references to the children in old parish magazines or in Women's Institute minutes or maybe there are memories lodged in the minds of people.
I should be grateful to hear from anyone who can offer information. I may be contacted on 01323 725524.
