Walking along Middle Street, Brighton, the other day, Hippodrome memories inevitably started to flow.

"You do look smart," I recall one of the Beverley Sisters telling me as I requested an autograph back in 1954.

It was nice also to chat to Winifred Attwell's mother as I stood admiring a giant photograph of her famous daughter in an enormous glass frame on the theatre wall.

Winifred's ambitions were classical and it was many years before she established a reputation in classical music.

However, to most people, she will always be remembered as the Queen of Honky Tonk.

I also recall Max Miller strolling up Middle Street for the 6.15pm performance.

There were, of course, great supporting acts such as George Meaton, The Big Noise, whose impressions of trains were amazingly accurate.

Percy Edwards could do any animal sounds spot on and those amazing people who made dozens of plates whizz round on long poles really made your head spin.
