Forget the league table, just keep playing great cricket.

That was the message from Peter Moores today as Sussex planned for the run-in which will shape their County Championship future.

The county thrashed Kent by an innings and 45 runs yesterday, their first home success of the four-day campaign, helped by four wickets apiece for spinners Mark Davis and Mushtaq Ahmed.

Mushtaq now has 17 victims in his last four Championship innings while Davis's 4-57 was his best return for two years.

Sussex remain in the bottom three but have won two of their last three four-dayers and director of cricket Moores said: "The side is showing its quality.

"The mood in the camp is good. We knew that before the game and it's nice when that translates into a good result.

"We've told everybody not to look at the table, just go game by game. That doesn't mean we haven't got loads of work to do.

"The key is keeping it simple, don't look too far ahead, just do the basics well, then the good players in the side will come through."

Sussex have no game until Sunday's totesport League tussle at Taunton but then face a hectic programme through August and much of September.

Moores said: "Any side that gets itself going can do a lot of damage in a short space of time."

Mohammad Akram, who limped off with a thigh strain, is expected to recover quickly while reports on Jason Lewry's knee operation are due.
