My thanks go to Ivor Caplin MP for his initiative in providing funds for Second World War veterans and their wives to visit battle sites and areas where they had been on active service.
I was able to see the graves of members of the crew I served with in the Royal Navy after action off the Dutch coast, who are buried in Holland.
Last autumn, I also visited a British war cemetery in Belgium and witnessed the burial of a First World War soldier who was killed in the nearby trenches. His remains were found during excavations.
It was a moving service and I was delighted to see Mr Caplin who, as minister for veteran affairs, made the journey to pay his respects.
