I was interested to read the article on door supervisors and plans to regulate the industry nationally (The Argus, August 19).
In fact there is already a regulatory scheme in Brighton and Hove and has been since the mid 1990s.
Under the scheme all premises with a public entertainments licence must have their door supervisors registered with the council. This means they undertake a council-approved training course, which includes first aid, and they undergo a police check.
At the time it was introduced it was pioneering and is now a recognised standard for the industry locally.
The entertainment industry is now a key element of our local economy and it is important we do all we can to make sure customers can enjoy themselves in a safe environment.
-Councillor Don Turner, chairman, Brighton and Hove licensing committee
