Your description of the University of Brighton scheme (The Argus, August 27) is not quite accurate.

"Green roofs" and "green walls" are building surfaces that are planted with vegetation - not just painted green.

The concept is to provide space for wildlife, increase the visual appeal of developments and provide other benefits such as energy conservation and absorbing rainfall (therefore reducing storm water flows). Whether some green walls and roofs are adequate compensation for a wildlife site is another matter.

You can find out more at www.livingroofs.org and see real Brightonian examples on the Ditchling Road at Viaduct Road end, at the Diggers site in Hollingdean and the Hedgehog houses in Bevendean.
