Mark McGhee believes Chris McPhee might fill the full-time vacancy of Albion target man.

The Seagulls give McPhee a run-out in a friendly against Worthing at Woodside Road tomorrow (7pm).

McPhee, who suffered a foot injury in pre-season, will make his first appearance of the new term along with Richard Carpenter, who has been out with a knee problem.

Charlie Oatway returns for the first time since limping off with a hamstring problem in the opening day defeat at Reading.

Simon Rodger is also set to come back from ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee, sustained against Middlesbrough 12 months ago.

Seagulls boss McGhee hopes McPhee, Oatway and Carpenter will be available for the next Coca-Cola Championship fixture at Watford on September 11.

But his top priority is to find a replacement for target man Chris Iwelumo, who left in the summer.

That has not changed despite the success of stand-in Adam Virgo, the defender who scored the match-winner at Leicester on Monday.

McGhee said: "We've struggled all season because we haven't had a target man.

"Adam's success has not eased the necessity of finding a target man. It's worked well for us and if we can find ourselves someone who does 50 per cent as well as Virgs we won't be in bad shape.

"Chris McPhee will be given every opportunity to prove that he's the one, that he is the type of player we need. You never know, Chris might be the surprise package."
