The Graham cartoon (Letters, August 27) highlighted the shocking standards of literacy and numeracy.
Earlier in the week, a photo appeared in The Argus of a hand-written notice outside a pub that contained "strictley" for "strictly" and "behavior" for "behaviour".
Half of all hand-written notices now contain spelling errors and so, too, do many printed ones.
Grammar has also hit rock bottom. We constantly hear that people are "stood" instead of "standing" in the street and "sat down" instead of "sitting down". Even BBC announcers say "the police is investigating" instead of "are investigating".
Still, when well-known sportsmen say "it was one of them days", "we got beat" and "we was due for a win", I suppose it is far too late to stop the rot now.
