Drivers are being forced to slow down on dozens of rural roads in Sussex.

East Sussex County Council is to lower speed limits from 40mph to 30mph on 34 routes.

They were chosen following an investigation into speeds in 77 areas.

The Local Speed Limit Review began last year and 13 speed limits have already been lowered in the first phase.

Matthew Lock, lead county councillor for transport and the environment, said: "Vehicles driving too fast through villages or along residential roads are a massive problem for the people who live there.

"It spoils their quality of life and threatens their safety.

"We want our roads to be safer for all users - pedestrians, cyclists and drivers."

The decision, which has been backed by Sussex Police, was made after council officers studied traffic speeds, crash histories and roadside developments.

Further consultation will take place with local people and parish councils on individual schemes as they are developed.

Areas in which 30mph limits are to be introduced on some roads include Maresfield, Northiam, Bexhill, Cowbeech, Crowborough, Heathfield, Kingston, Peasmarsh, Buxted, Catsfield, Flimwell, Hailsham, Horsebridge and Newick.
