I am dismayed and perplexed at Cityclean's attitude to those who suffer from any disability and live within the current trial area of the new black bin scheme.
When the scheme was introduced to parts of central Brighton - our road was given three days' notice - anyone with a disability was encouraged to tell Cityclean so an assisted collection would take place.
I have a long-term disability so I put my name forward and initially my refuse was collected from a pre-arranged point on a weekly basis.
However, during the past six months, there have been four occasions when I have had to wait as long as three weeks for my rubbish to be collected and this only took place after I contacted Cityclean and appealed for a collection.
During this time, the smell from my refuse was terrible, attracting flies in the warmth of the summer weather. Recently I wrote to Gillian Marsden, assistant director of Cityclean, to request a meeting at which we could discuss how a workable solution could be found to improve my refuse collections.
I was amazed when she wrote to decline such a meeting, stating they would try and be more careful in refuse collections from my address, a promise that had already been broken on several occasions.
I don't know how she can be so brash and callous. Cityclean is discriminating against those with disability.
If Cityclean cannot cope with its current commitments, how on earth will it manage when the scheme is rolled out citywide as planned?
