Following a decision by President Bush not to meet Michael Howard in the USA I was pleased he was invited to Hove (The Argus, September 2) so he could see the challenges we face and hear about the successes.
Unfortunately, I must take issue with the misinformation that appeared in The Argus article.
Fighting crime and antisocial behaviour is at the top of Brighton and Hove City Council's agenda in partnership with Sussex Police.
Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, Operation Halter operates to disperse gangs of youths who are behaving badly and take alcohol from them and pour it away.
Mr Howard says we are not using anti social behaviour orders (ASBOS) enough but the council has served 69 and has another 22 in the pipeline.
The Hangleton toilets were not closed because of vandalism but are being refurbished and redesigned to put an end to the sexual practices being carried out in them.
The police and the council have far more powers from the Labour Government to deal with antisocial behaviour than when Michael Howard was Home Secretary. He did not give us any.
Residents can be assured we will continue the fight to make Brighton and Hove a safe city.
-Brian Fitch, Labour Councillor, Hangleton & Knoll
