The Rev John Webster asserts practices associated with witchcraft were superseded "through the spread of the Christian Gospel".
He ignores the fact that the gospel text, Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live (Exodus, chapter 22), was a clear and direct command from God.
It institutionalised one of the most primitive supersitions and inspired a witch-burning mania that swept Europe.
Christians argue that God's word was misunderstood by witch killers. If that was the case, God should have waited until he had developed a greater power of expression or until those whom he was addressing had acquired a greater depth of understanding.
